WWE Backlash 2018: Why Seth Rollins Should Retain The IC Title

2. Miz doesn’t need the title

I’ve mentioned this before, so I won’t ramble on too much about it, but I think divorcing the IC Title from The Miz is the best thing for both him and the championship. Miz has won that belt eight times and only Pedro Morales has held it for more combined days. However, his status as a cowardly heel who often needs to cheat to win has also chipped away at the already dulled luster of the once-prestigious title.

With his ability to generate heat without much difficulty, Miz doesn’t need a midcard title to boost himself up these days. His vanilla wrestling style certainly won’t improve the standing of any secondary championship either. At this point, Miz should be a braggadocious upper-midcarder that occasionally slides into the WWE Championship picture. It would take some work to repair the years of damage WWE has done to his in-ring credibility, but the former WWE Champion could hold his end in a high profile program with Styles (assuming Styles retains his title at Backlash).

For Miz, the Intercontinental Title should represent stagnation. He has blossomed into one of the most reliable acts in the company over the last couple of years, and he should be rewarded for that. He already has a dynamite feud with Daniel Bryan on the horizon, but the company should continue to give their utility heel new challenges. Miz has done all that he can with the IC strap.
