6. Austin Aries (Impact Grand Champion)

Austin Aries wished Eli Drake luck before his World Title match next week against Pentagon Jr., and he once again put over the Impact Grand Championship as his “other” world title. Since Drake will almost certainly lose to the man with “Cero Miedo”, could he be Aries’s first feud for the Impact Grand Championship? It seems like Aries “turned heel” last week when he lectured the whole locker room about how great he is and started insulting Moose, but maybe Impact is experimenting with him as a nuanced, “tweener” character (which would fit him).

Either way, Aries wants to prove that the Impact Grand Championship is a big deal, and hopefully he gets a chance to do just that.

5. Matt Sydal (X Division Champion)

What more is there to say about Matt Sydal as a heel champion? The guy is absolutely hilarious, and I couldn’t stop laughing when he told Taiji Ishimori during their title match on television, “You need to open your third eye, buddy,” while frenetically poking his own forehead.

Sydal and Ishimori unsurprisingly put on the match of the night, and I love how Sydal is focusing more on working the lower body of his opponents as a heel. The matches still have some high-flying moves and are worked at a fast enough pace, but they aren’t nearly as blistering as Sydal’s usual work. His new finisher is more sudden, less dramatic, and essentially impossible to cheer, which is also fantastic. Sydal is setting a new bar, and I expect him to settle into the top three by the end of the summer.
