WWE: The Right Way To Break Up The New Day

The New Day has enjoyed four years of success in the WWE. Now is the perfect opportunity to break them up and build them into individual attractions.

There comes a time in which every good professional wrestling storyline must come to an end. There’s always another payoff or build for creative teams to work toward. Within the WWE we may be witnessing the first steps of such a situation with the New Day.

The popular faction featuring Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods has reached a point in which it’s time to break them up. This gimmick has outlasted early criticisms and revitalized each of their careers. Splitting them up now, done the right way, creates an opportunity for continued success as singles competitors.

In 2014 The New Day debuted as a stable with a questionable gimmick, but three men with unquestionable talent in the ring. Since then they’ve reach the height of four-time tag team champions and winning the PWI tag team of the year in 2015 and 2016. They have a host of big matches against the likes of Tyson Kidd and Cesaro, The Usos and others. Their accolades speak for themselves and they deserve the respect that comes with being one of the best teams of this generation.

But with tag team wrestling going on the back burner, breaking the New Day up creates an opportunity for all three of them at the same time. The current storyline in the SmackDown wrestling division is that the Bludgeon Brothers are running amok, dominating everyone in their way, and recently defeating the Usos at the Greatest Royal Rumble. Since the New Day were included in that story at one time, they could answer an open challenge by the Brothers on an upcoming episode of the show. After answering the challenge they should lose again, without any controversy.

The next time that the New Day are shown on television, the three should be in an argument – not the knockdown, drag out fight type of argument, but a disagreement as to who is the best and insert SmackDown general manager, Paige.

She offers a challenge to the team; each man has a singles match and the one with the most impressive victory gets a shot at the United States title. Big E defeats Cesaro, Kingston loses to Sheamus, leaving Woods as the remaining member of the group.

He would lose to a debuting Andrade Almas or a member of Sanity. Paige should then shower Big E with praises as the real name out of The New Day, leaving Kingston and Woods feeling slighted, but still in support of their partner.

On the next week of SmackDown, Big E drops the title opportunity to Jeff Hardy while Kingston and Woods are ringside, snickering at his loss.

Then during a backstage segment the three get into a full-on argument that ends with Paige once again stepping in, creating a triple threat match between the competitors: the winner of the match gets to decide the fates of the two losers. A triple threat between The New Day could be featured as a part of the upcoming Money in the Bank PPV.

After four years of working together, there’s clearly a wealth of built up chemistry between Woods, Kingston and Big E; creating the perfect mix for them to deliver a very well done match. Big E comes out the winner of the match. With stipulation in hand he sends Woods to 205 Live, Kingston stays on SmackDown and Big E elects to move to Raw.

Woods is one of the best talkers in the WWE today. He has a way with words that transcends the simple script writing in professional wrestling today. It’s a talent that many on the roster do not have. 205 Live as a show features some of the most athletic men on the roster and a number of athletes that can put on great matches, but they lack the ability to verbally tell a story.

Inserting Woods into that division immediately gives 205 Live a star that can put on great matches and build a story at the same time. WWE had the opportunity to build a true star on the 205 Live platform with Austin Aries; making a second attempt with Woods gives the organization the opportunity to right that wrong.

Kingston is one title away from being a WWE Grand Slam champion. Leaving him on SmackDown creates the opening to insert him into angles that involve AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura and others. Kingston has proven that he can hang with main event stars in the past and after this successful tenure with The New Day he’s elevated to an even higher level that could see him take SmackDown’s title.

Then you have Big E, the one who has seen perhaps the most growth during his time within the group. Placing him on Raw allows that growth to continue on the promotion’s flagship show. Big E can fit within a full range of characters and with the roster on Raw there are a number of men he could be paired with for intriguing storylines and action.

There are often times in which breaking up a faction causes those involved to fall off of the radar. The New Day turned a poorly-written gimmick into one that made them the most popular group in recent memory. Breaking them up with an intriguing storyline and sending them to separate brands is the way to go to keep fans invested and maximize the potential of Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E.
