No Way Jose vs. Baron Corbin vs. Bobby Roode, Money in the Bank Qualifier

Result: Bobby Roode pinned No Way Jose to qualify for Money in the Bank

Rating: 2.75 out of 5 stars

Out of the four matches over the past two weeks to fill the Raw portion of the Men’s MITB Match, this is the oddest one, in my opinion. KO vs. Braun? Fine. Balor, Zayn, and Reigns? Sure! Elias, Jinder Mahal, and Bobby Lashley later tonight? Definitely!

But No Way Jose, who literally went from “local talent squash match” to “guy who gets pasted by a debuting superstar” in two weeks? Baron Corbin, who won last year’s MITB and failed his cash-in? And Bobby Roode, who has been on the losing end of a feud with Elias, without looking particularly strong in doing so? Not exactly a murderer’s row there.

The way the match was paced didn’t really do it any favors, either. In typical WWE triple threat fashion, it was a series of concurrent singles matches. But none of them clicked, so it seemed like a chore. Jose spent most of the early and middle of the match doing literally nothing, Corbin acted like a bully but got no comeuppance, and Roode did his usual Triple H Appreciation Day repertoire.

That said, the match was fun. Roode winning is a million percent the correct call. No reason for Corbin to go right back to the match so quickly, and Jose has precisely ZERO momentum. It’s not a match of the year, or event night (it may not even be the match of the hour), but it got the job done.

Angle’s Night Gets Worse

Kevin Owens threatens Kurt angle with a phone call to Stephanie McMahon (insert Scott Hall “scared” dance here) before checking on Jinder Mahal. The Maharaja is hurting, but he’s still got to compete later tonight — no postponements.
