Shayna Baszler Vs Dakota Kai for the NXT Women’s Championship

Result: Shayna Baszler wins with the Kirifuda Clutch

Grade: B-

Shayna Baszler’s feud with Dakota Kai on NXT has been a curious one. While many fans have complained that Kai has been made to look weak throughout the feud, but personally, I think it’s done a good job of getting the fans behind her.

The story of Baszler bullying Kai dominated the majority of the match, and the NXT women’s champion excelled in her role. She physically and psychologically tormented Kai, beating her down methodically to pick up her victory.

Thankfully, though, Kai finally stood up to her bully and rallied against her to a huge crowd pop. Baszler still picked up the win, however, locking in the deadly Kirifuda Clutch and making her opponent tap out. Still, Kai stood up to her bully, which felt like a victory in itself and played out well.

After the match was when the fun really began though. As Baszler celebrated her victory, a deranged Nikki Cross ran down to the ring and confronted her, she then snatched Baszler’s belt to a massive pop and ran off with it.

Cross then challenged Baszler to a match there and then, with Kai as referee. With the crowd eating it up, Cross hit a swinging neck-breaker and Kai counted the three, leading to Cross going on a crazy celebration in the crowd and leaving the ring with the belt in her hands. This was an excellent way to close the show, and really highlighted Nikki Cross’ character. The crowd were eating it up, and the feud between Baszler and Cross could grow to be one of the most unique and interesting on the brand.

Despite being low on wrestling time, this was a really fun edition of NXT. EC3 and Chris Dijak looked great, while Ricochet arguably stole the show with his performance. The closing segment was great fun, and the opening segment did exactly what it needed to. The focus is now clearly on Takeover: Chicago, and the event is shaping up very nicely indeed.
