Remembering Vader is easy when you go back and look at some of the biggest matches of his career.
This week the professional wrestling world lost an athlete that broke the mold during his time and would still be a spectacle in today’s industry. Leon White, the man known as Vader, died on Monday due to heart failure and pneumonia. The wrestling community responded with over whelming sadness for a man who set the tone for what we see from many men of great size in today’s wrestling industry.
When we think of the athletic big in professional wrestling either the name Vader or Bam Bam Bigelow should come to mind first. While there’s a list of men who continuously wow us with the ability to do things that their body shouldn’t allow, Vader set the tone for what is more common place today. Standing 6’5” and weighing in at nearly 450 pounds; White moved around the ring like a man a portion of that size. Clips of him doing the Vader Bomb or the Moonsault off of the top rope are as captivating now as they were during the 1990s.
Vader was tearing up wrestling rings around the world long before the ability to re-watch matches was made possible via the Internet or streaming platforms. But, thankfully to their inclusion fans of today can go back and watch the matches that made “The Mastodon” one of the most feared men in the industry.
