Final Thoughts

When looking at both blocks, there are so many matches that stand out. We will be seeing Hiroshi Tanahashi take on Kazuchika Okada again. Okada will also face Minoru Suzuki, who he has now been a part of two 30-minute draws with wrestling’s favourite Murder Grandpa. Omega will be having matches against Naito, Zack Sabre Jr, and Tomohiro Ishii. Ibushi vs. Omega closes the B block out, in what will be an absolutely spectacular match. Hangman Page and Jay White are making their debuts in the G1, which also brings a series of fresh matches.

There are so many people who could win the whole thing, it makes predicting how it will go nearly impossible. However, my predictions for the tournament are as stands:

  • Okada will do well, and make it to the finals, but just barely. He will not win the G1 Climax.
  • Kenny Omega will miss making the finals due to losing to Kota Ibushi. This will set up a future title match between the two.
  • Zack Sabre Jr. and Tama Tonga will defeat Omega, also setting up future title matches, with Tonga getting his shot at the NJPW Long Beach show on September 30th.
  • Juice Robinson will get more wins that most people expected, and will be one of the MVPs of the tournament.
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi will come close to making it to the finals, but just miss it.
  • Tetsuya Naito will make it to the finals and challenge Okada and finally defeat him, winning the G1 2 years in a row.

Regardless of how it all goes down, one thing is absolutely for sure: The G1 Climax will not disappoint. NJPW always delivers on their big shows, and we are in for a treat with all 19 of them. The English commentary will be an added bonus. This will be a great starting point for any new fans, as the G1 will see the culmination of some stories and the advancement of others as everything heads towards Wrestle Kingdom on January 4th.
