Bad Luck Fale def Kazuchika Okada

Party-time Okada is the best. Like what even is going on? The balloons and the stumbling around like a crazy person and the red hair… it’s just too good.

Fitting to his new character, Okada starts off by treating this like a joke. He antagonizes Fale and laughs and runs from him. This backfires when Tonga Loa tries to get involved, but Okada perseveres. Most of the match ended up being a pretty standard back and forth affair. Okada pulled out a diving senton over the top rope cause it’s party time I guess.

The finish came after two rainmakers and multiple dropkicks. Okada seemed poised to hit a final rainmaker and win the match, but Fale managed to cover the ref in the corner long enough for Tama Tonga to hit the ring and gun stun Kazu. Bad Luck Fall followed, and Bad Luck Fale picked up the win. Another huge upset. Okada is 0-2. The world might be ending.

This wasn’t a classic by any means, but it was effective. If they hadn’t been convincing enough already, tonight left no room for doubt- The BC OGs mean business.

Jay White def Hiroshi Tanahashi

Switchblade immediately went for Tanahashi’s injured knee to get ahead, then switched to an all out assault. He targeted the neck in the ring, hit a saito suplex on the floor, then battered The Ace against the barricade. It was brutal. Tanahashi tried to make a comeback, but failed because White is just too good at being evil. A low blow, a chair to the face, and the blade runner got the three count.

This wasn’t amazing in the way a New Japan main event is typically amazing, but it was still great in its own way. I do think this felt a bit too similar to Night 1’s main event against Okada, but at the same time, there were things that this match did much better. Jay White has nuclear amounts of heat after completely defiling Okada and Tanahashi in back to back matches.

It took Jay White a bit to completely settle into this heel persona, but it’s starting to click and it’s fantastic. He comes off as such an angsty brat, but he can flip a switch and turn sadistic and evil when he needs to. If he’s not already New Japan’s top heel, he will be soon.

In conclusion, this was an absolutely shocking night of the G1 with Suzuki, Okada, and Tanahashi all taking losses. We may not be getting the pure wrestling classics we all love and expect from NJPW, but I’m really enjoying the chaotic nature of A block through 2 nights. Can’t wait to see where things go from here.
