The push to SummerSlam kicked off in earnest this week on WWE Raw. Who were the big movers and shakers in our power rankings this week?

On WWE Raw this week, the roster began its push to SummerSlam after the latest episode of WCW Nitro pay per view Extreme Rules. Matches on the Extreme Rules card with “championship implications” were ignored on Raw and set up for another time. You know, typical WWE stuff.

Every week after Raw, we’ll take a look at the roster to find out who is in the best position moving forward. But, much like the creative team, we’re not paying attention to wins and losses only. They matter a bit, but a strong loss is better than a lousy win, at least as far as I’m concerned.

Championships? They have their place, but just because a particular superstar has a heavy piece of gold around their waste doesn’t guarantee them a spot at the top. And if a superstars doesn’t have a match, they can still move up or down based on what they did in a given week.

So what does contribute to our rankings? Long term potential is key — how is a superstar’s position today leading to tomorrow? The past helps, too — just because someone has a big win one week doesn’t negate 17 weeks of losses before that. Think of ESPN’s NFL power rankings, where a 5-3 team could be ranked higher than a 6-2 team.

Let’s take a look at the updated power rankings for WWE Raw, following the July 16 episode.
