The July 24 edition of WWE SmackDown was another stellar show for the blue brand that shined a light on the buildup towards SummerSlam next month.

Last night’s WWE SmackDown saw some impressive in-ring action along with impressive promos and mic work. Additionally, a couple of championship matches were made official for SummerSlam, including the WWE Championship

Everything is taking shape on the blue brand with championship matches coming along nicely along with other key angles.  With that being said, let’s take a look at a few grades from the July 24 edition of WWE SmackDown.

5. Opening Segment

Randy Orton had been gone from the WWE for about two months by the time Extreme Rules rolled around.  But his return at the pay-per-view raised a few eyebrows and was the first step of The Viper becoming a heel once again with his sadistic tendencies shining through.

He took his heelish tendencies to another level when he attacked Jeff Hardy last week on SmackDown in his rematch with Shinsuke Nakamura for the United States Championship.  Orton never gave an explanation as to why he did what he did, until last night when he opened up the show by getting some things off his chest.

The Viper said he did what he did because of the fans not respecting him and turning their backs on him.  He went on to say that he doesn’t have any cool hand signs or he was never an indie darling, but he was bread for ultimate success and instead of paying his dues in front of a hundred people in a bingo hall, he was paying them in front of millions of people.

Orton made a lot of great points to fit his argument and came across as the heel version of his character that everyone has clamored for.  He even said he was going to end Hardy’s career and the two are bound to have a big match sometime in the near future.  Overall, this was a very good promo that should do wonders for this new version of The Viper moving forward.

The dialogue wasn’t completely perfect, but as a whole, this was a great promo by one of the most sadistic heels of all-time.
