2. Toni Storm

Like many PROGRESS wrestlers, Storm has reportedly signed a WWE UK deal with the company, allowing her to make sporadic appearances across the board. As a participant in both the inaugural Mae Young Classic, as well as the upcoming Mae Young Classic II, Storm is uniquely positioned to represent the best of independent and WWE wrestling.

Facing off against Sasha would be the meeting of two worlds. Banks has often been considered one of the best women’s wrestlers in WWE, and Storm, one of the best women wrestling on the independent scene. A meeting between the two is likely to produce magic, and would be a show-stealing match.

While likely, WWE Evolution will focus on the main rosters of Raw, Smackdown and NXT, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t become a celebration of the multi-layered history of women’s wrestling as a whole. Banks v Storm has the potential to become one of the year’s most must-see events.

1. Bayley

WWE’s Women’s Evolution all started here. Sasha Banks vs. Bayley was the first women’s match to headline a major WWE PPV event at NXT TakeOver: Respect, the first ever women’s 30-minute Iron Man match, and the longest women’s match in WWE history at the time. The Banks/Bayley rivalry is the stuff of legend, and produced a magic that has been hard to replicate in WWE.

It’s arguable that their singles match at Respect was the catalyst that kickstarted the WWE Women’s Evolution, and helped to legitimise women’s wrestling in the eyes of fans. After a year of fans clamouring for change with the #GiveDivasAChance hashtag, this was the vindication they were looking for.

In recent months, WWE have teased the breaking of the Sasha/Bayley friendship, in an on-and-off again relationship tease. While stretching the story out until October may wear it thin, the prospect of revisiting one of the greatest modern feuds in wrestling should bring hype and anticipation for WWE’s first ever all-women PPV.
