WWE: Ranking the Top 10 Greatest Promos of All Time

CM Punk Drops a Pipe Bomb
What is now often referred to as the “Pipe Bomb” promo by CM Punk, came at a time where WWE really needed something to make the product more interesting. Boy did Punk ever deliver that in this promo.
Punk’s worked-shoot style promo touched on everything you could ask for; calling John Cena an ass kisser, talking about defending the WWE Championship in Ring of Honor or New Japan Pro Wrestling, to even questioning whether or not the company will be better after Vince McMahon is dead. This ticked all the boxes of a great shoot style promo.
This would not only kick off the greatest run for CM Punk’s career in WWE heading into his title match against John Cena at Money in the Bank, it was also one of the best stretches for any individual in WWE history if you ask me. For the next several weeks, I could not wait to see Raw, only to see what CM Punk is going to do. What’s he gonna say this week? Who’s he going to shoot on next?
Prior to this promo, Raw was getting stale and repetitive, but after it, it became must-see television.
While CM Punk had good runs such as the one as the Straight Edge Society, or going back to when he won the World Heavyweight Title in his feud with Jeff Hardy, Punk never had the chance to reach his full potential until this promo. He was a completely different character than what we were used to seeing from him, and he built so much momentum and buzz around him from wrestling fans that everyone was on their toes waiting to see what would happen.
Some of the best promos of all time were the best because there was a blend of reality in the promo. That’s what made Punk’s promo so special. A lot of the things he said, they were his real feelings, but presented in a way that we were left wondering what was real and what was not.
