7. Longest Reigning Modern-Day World Champion
When Brock Lesnar returned to the WWE in 2012 amidst much fanfare, it was widely accepted that he would be appearing on a part-time schedule. Given his immense drawing power and his legitimate fighting credentials having been UFC Heavyweight Champion during his time away, most fans were happy to accept Lesnar as a special attraction.
Initially, his appearances were met with huge levels of excitement by fans and he organically turned babyface after losing the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 31. Over time, though, attitudes towards Lesnar have soured as his appearances have become more sporadic and his displays in the ring have been less engaging.
That didn’t stop the company booking Lesnar to win the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 33 from fellow veteran, Goldberg. And Lesnar has held that title since, recently overtaking CM Punk’s record 434-day reign as the longest running modern-day world champion.
While it can be argued that Lesnar’s lack of title defence’s during his reign (only 13 in total) have seriously damaged the credibility of the Universal Championship, it cannot be denied that his reign has altered the history books. This record adds to the long list of milestones achieved by Lesnar during his time with WWE.
