One of the best things about Brock Lesnar’s second run in WWE has been his unique ability to blur the lines between kayfabe and reality. This is in part due to his reputation as a mercenary and also due to his legitimate fighting background in the UFC.
In the PG-era of the WWE, Brock Lesnar can still be relied upon to create moments that may have been more welcome during the glory days of the Attitude era. Seemingly, Lesnar is granted a little more freedom than some of his peers, and his use of blood in a time where WWE have almost completely eradicated it’s use on television is particularly noticeable.
When Lesnar and Randy Orton squared off in the main event of SummerSlam 2016, it was pitched as a match 15 years in the making. Two of the poster boys of WWE had never fought in a match of any real significance and Orton’s return after a prolonged absence created the opportunity for this contest. The match followed the general script of recent Lesnar matches, with several German suplexes and a dominant display by the Beast.
However, the match took a shocking turn at the end as Lesnar mounted Orton and removed his gloves. He then proceeded to viciously attack Orton’s head as the veteran superstar tried desperately to defend himself. A slicing elbow strike opened a huge gash on Orton’s skull and Lesnar was declared the winner by TKO. This was an unusually violent occurrence in a WWE ring in an era that has been dominated by efforts to make the product more family-friendly.
