5. Asuka

At NXT TakeOver: Toronto in November 2016, Mickie James made her return to the WWE in an exceptional match with Asuka where she challenged for the NXT Women’s Championship. Originally this spot had been offered to Trish Stratus and what a wonderful idea it was in theory. Stratus would return in her native Toronto, the greatest women’s wrestler of all-time taking on the seemingly unbeatable Asuka. Due to Stratus being pregnant at the time, the match never materialised but the tantalising thought of what could have been still lingers.

Asuka has had her aura somewhat damaged since arriving on the main roster nearly twelve months ago. She has never fully recovered after suffering the end of her undefeated streak at the hands of Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 34. At this point in time, it seems unlikely that Asuka will even find a spot on the SummerSlam card, an unthinkable situation only a few months ago.

Perhaps a rivalry with a legend like Stratus could be exactly what Asuka needs to revive her faltering career. It could offer an enthralling redemption story after Asuka begins questioning her own abilities and it could even lead to the heel turn that would likely revitalise Asuka as a performer.
