The Top Five Professional Wrestling Video Games of All Time
WCW vs NWO: World Tour (Nintendo 64 – 1997)
This is perhaps the best WCW wrestling video game of all time. Not only did it capture the era of wrestling that features stable warfare, this game by THQ included a very robust roster. The game has more than 60 wrestlers available, but what makes this group so interesting is that the roster not only includes popular NWO and WCW stars, but there are fictional organizations that are meant to represent brands from around the world. For example, Hayabusa, Taka Michinoku and even a secret character that bears a resemblance to Muhammed Ali is available.
When paired with its deep roster, WCW vs NWO includes a stellar grappling system that reveals a wide range of moves for every character. Moves vary based on where the two combatants are in the ring, stamina, and their momentum. A big part of the enjoyment around this entry was the time spent finding every available move for all of the characters on the roster. It was one thing to find a well-known move for your favorite wrestler, but it would be something else when you’d find one of the hundred hidden techniques in the game.
The Nintendo 64 featured some of the best wrestling video games that the industry would see. In many ways, those games still compare positively to the games that are coming out today. While it doesn’t have the in depth story telling of the present-day games, WCW vs. NWO: World Tour still told a narrative in its own way that fully captured what was going on in professional wrestling during that time. It’s an enjoyable game
