The Demon Finn Balor Returns and Makes A Statement, Squashing Baron Corbin
In what was expected to be an inconsequential match on the SummerSlam card, The Demon Finn Balor made a surprising, yet welcome, return and made short work of Baron Corbin.
Everything leading up to this match was kind of cringeworthy. With Corbin harping on many of the same points Big Cass made in his feud with Daniel Bryan before his sudden release earlier this year, it seemed like this rubber match was going to be a short and sweet affair that wouldn’t really mean anything for either Balor or Corbin.
Suddenly, the lights dropped all the way down and the low notes accompanied by blinking red lights. My spine shivered and my draw dropped open as the music caught it’s breath.
The Demon King had returned. And he wanted blood.
Corbin seemed to immediately realize this, yelling about how this wasn’t what he agreed on and fear in his eyes. Still, the match started and The Demon went to work.
It’s been about a year since The Demon has been seen in the ring with Finn Balor’s match against AJ Styles at TLC last year, but something felt different about the Demon. He moved faster and was treating Corbin more aggressively than his human counterpart could even dream of, wagging his tongue at the Constable the entire way to victory.
This match went so fast, which is sometimes a disappointment, but it was a welcome turn of events in this case. The Demon previously didn’t really seem to differ much from Finn minus a few moments here and there, but tonight it all seemed to click. The element of surprise, the fear in Corbin’s eyes reminiscent of the first time The Ascension laid eyes on him in NXT in 2014, and the level of primal aggression previously unseen as he threw Corbin around like a discarded toy.
To steal a turn of phrase from his opponent, he made short work of Corbin and made a statement along the way. Finn Balor didn’t come to WWE to just be a smiling face, and everyone in line for the Universal Title should be looking over their shoulders right now for the Demon King.
