Rumors: Why The Bellas Were REALLY at WWE SummerSlam
By Harry Austen
If you watched SummerSlam – all four hundred hours of it – you would have seen two notable former Women’s (well… Divas) Champions on the show. The duo I’m of course referring to are the Bellas.
Nikki and Brie Bella have been out of action for a while. However, they are still in spotlight more than ever – with one probably wanting to be in it less so. The Bellas are marketing powerhouses, with WWE still considering the two as major names in the division thanks mostly to their social media presence – which they made sure to mention at least three times during their SummerSlam backstage segment – and general marketability.
But just why were the Bellas on the show? Was it just to give their numerous reality shows a cheap plug? Well, yes and no. The two were most certainly on the show to help put over their shows and the larger Bella brand. However, Nikkia and Brie were also present for other reasons.
Brie’s appearance was perfectly timed for her SmackDown return, which we saw on Tuesday. WWE wanted her on SummerSlam to help remind the audience, effectively, that she still exists. In a sense, it was foreshadowing her return a few days later. And now that she’s been booked with her husband Daniel Bryan in a Mixed Tag Team Match against The Miz and Maryse, it’s obvious this has been in the works for some time.

Nikki was on the show for a different reason, aside the cheap and awfully done plugs. She was there, mentioning Ronda Rousey by name, so that WWE could get a (small) gauge into the reaction she elicits from the crowd. Make no mistake, Nikki uttering the eventual Raw Women’s Champion’s name was no coincidence. And it was purely done to see what the reaction would be to the two in the same spot.
The post-match celebration with Rousey and Natalya was just more of the same, just a way to judge how well the pairing of Nikki and Ronda would be received. As of right now, our sources say while it’s being discussed, Nikki Bella vs. Ronda Rousey is nowhere near being the actual plan for WWE Evolution. However, as we all know, things can change very quickly. And this was WWE’s way of cleverly testing the water to see how the fans would react.
