The New Day remain one of WWE’s most over acts four years removed from debut

No one ever expected The New Day to amount to such success when they originally arrived on the WWE scene four years ago, yet here they are, still standing and at the peak of their popularity.

Four years and five tag team championships later, The New Day remain one of the most over acts in all of WWE.

Needless to say, virtually no one has that type of longevity in WWE these days, especially tag teams. Normally, stables and tandems tend to break up within a year or so when someone turns on their partner(s), despite how much success they may have attained together.

Look no further than The Shield, who were among WWE’s most prolific factions in the last decade. Fans often forget that their tenure lasted less than two years before Seth Rollins betrayed his brethren, yet The New Day have been around for twice that time and then some.

The Usos also deserve recognition for remaining a unit for as long as they have (since 2010). That said, WWE would be foolish to ever break them up because neither Jey nor Jimmy have any sort of a future in singles competition, which isn’t at all the case with New Day.

Kofi Kingston was already an established star well before he joined forces with Big E and Xavier Woods. With multiple Intercontinental, United States and Tag Team titles to his credit, he could have continued to coast on his past accomplishments for the rest of his run with WWE.

Likewise, Big E was looked at as a breakout babyface waiting to happen and was being primed for big things in the upper echelon of the card on a handful of occasions. Woods was the only one who wasn’t up to anything of note pre-New Day, but even he could have made a name for himself on his own eventually.

Instead, the three of them decided to create an alliance and make something out of nothing in the latter of 2014. After being overlooked for many months, they were finally brought to TV as an act, though it likely wasn’t what they had in mind for themselves when they first formed.

The happy-go-lucky trio was almost instantly rejected by the WWE Universe because they could see right through their facade. The New Day, as they were collectively called, were hardly an exciting addition to a fairly lifeless tag team division at that point and seemed to be doomed before they could ever really get going.

Once they were given more creative freedom and the chance to develop their characters, however, New Day took off as one of the most universally beloved stables in several years.

As a result of their incredibly entertaining heel run, New Day was inevitably forced to turn babyface early on in 2016 and began to pump out more merchandise than they were before. All the while, they reigned as WWE Tag Team champions and maintained a stranglehold on the straps for a whopping 483 days, a company record.

During their lengthy stint as champions, New Day experienced periods where they failed to evolve, rehashed the same stagnant material for their promos and were on the verge of breaking apart. Thankfully, they worked through their woes and won the audience over again by finding new ways to reinvent themselves.

Had WWE split up Kingston, Big E and Woods prematurely, they wouldn’t be the WWE Hall of Fame-worthy, history-making, five-time tag title holders they are today.

Of course, the trio won’t retire as a team, not to mention there is money to be made with each member of New Day as singles Superstars down the road. Big E in particular can be a main event caliber competitor if he tones down the silliness and channels his inner intensity.

In the meantime, their innate ability to stay relevant as well as immensely popular with fans should not go unnoticed. Granted, it would be in their best interest to not go as overboard with the pancake obsession as they have been lately, but their recent strong string of matches against The Bludgeon Brothers, SAnitY and The Bar speaks for itself.

Regardless of how long their latest reign as SmackDown Tag Team champions lasts, New Day have surely cemented their spot as a perennial top tandem in WWE and will ride this wave out until they have milked the gimmick for everything it’s worth.
