Asuka Returns To SmackDown Live to Save Naomi from IIconics

It’s been some time since the WWE Universe has seen Asuka on WWE television. But she made a big return to SmackDown Live this week, saving Naomi from a two on one ambush.

The last time we saw Asuka on television, it was mid-July. She had just failed to defeat Carmella for the SmackDown Women’s Championship for the second consecutive pay per view. But she did defeat Billie Kay on SmackDown Live before largely disappearing from sight.

But all that changed this week on SmackDown. Naomi took on Peyton Royce in a singles match, continuing her feud with The IIconics. After a quick match, Naomi emerged victorious, but the presence of Billie Kay at ringside meant that the war was far from over.

Kay got in the ring immediately to attack, and Royce soon joined in. As Naomi was victim of the uneven beatdown, a familiar piece of music began blaring through the public address system, and The Empress of Tomorrow was back.

It didn’t take long for Asuka to pick up right where she left off. Within seconds of entering the ring, both Royce and Kay were dispatched with ease. After making short work of both IIconics, Asuka checked on Naomi, and we may have the beginning of a brand new tag team on SmackDown Live.

More from SmackDown

It’s not out of the realm of possibility: Not too long ago, Asuka and Naomi teamed up for a dark match before an episode of SmackDown. Usually, things like that are an indication of possible future storylines. If it works off the camera, try it on them next. So it looks like the Empress and the Glow Warrior are going to be united for at least a little while.

Some may find fault with how WWE is using Asuka, especially if someone of her considerable talents is being “wasted” in a tag team. For the record, there’s no good reason not to do this, since it seems like the Women’s Championship is pretty much a two woman race right now. Give Asuka some time in a tag team, get back on TV and into the swing of things, and go from there.
