Rey Mysterio Reportedly Finalizes Deal to Return to WWE

It’s been rumored for a long time, but reportedly is now official. Rey Mysterio is headed back to WWE with a new two year deal.

Ever since his surprise return in the 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble Match, Rey Mysterio has been linked to rumors for a full-time return to the company. Mysterio was announced as DLC for the latest WWE video game, WWE 2K19, and he appeared at the Greatest Royal Rumble, but nothing more came of anything.

Until today, that is. Mike Johnson of PW Insider reports that WWE and Rey Mysterio have come to terms on a two year deal, and it’s a done deal. It’s the same basic terms that were reported to be in the works back in July, although obviously the report was premature.

One interesting note from Johnson’s report: Mysterio had been hoping for a contract length of 18 months as opposed to two years, but was unsuccessful. However, he did negotiate an “out clause” to give notice to leave after a year and a half.

This is obviously big news for WWE, as they’re adding one of the all-time greats back into the fold. Mysterio has been riding the waves of one of the best years of his career. Besides the two WWE appearances, he’s wrestled at All In, and competed alongside Jushin “Thunder” Liger and Hiroshi Tanahashi for New Japan Pro Wrestling. He even made a return to AAA earlier this year, as well.

But for better or for worse, WWE is still regarded as the pinnacle of sports entertainment and professional wrestling. So any performer worth their salt usually makes it a point to try and succeed on the big stage. Rey Mysterio has already had a stellar WWE career, but it ended with a fizzle. Making a comeback would give Mysterio a chance to go out more on his own terms.

More from WWE

There’s no word yet on exactly when Mysterio will make his return to WWE television. This is total speculation here, but I would venture a guess he’d be a part of the WWE World Cup event at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. It’s the kind of event that would benefit from star power — like GRR back in April — and the “World Cup” format makes it easy to have Mysterio represent Mexico.

That would also help kick start a potential feud with Andrade “Cien” Almas, something that is truly inevitable, although not rushing into it would be better, in my opinion. Whatever the potential plan is, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens with Rey Mysterio moving forward.
