WWE: Likeliest Duos to Compete for Women’s Tag Team Championships
By Bryan Heaton
One of pro wrestling’s worst kept secrets is WWE kicking around the idea of Women’s Tag Team Championships. If it finally comes to fruition, what teams would we be most likely to see vie for the new titles?
A common criticism of WWE over the years is that there are too many championships at any given time. After absorbing WCW nearly twenty years ago, there’s been few moments where there weren’t two world championships, a few secondary titles, a tag championship or two, some other ancillary title, and a women’s title.
But most of that possible excess is in the men’s division. As far as the women go, there’s always been just the women’s championship — until a few years ago, when both Raw and SmackDown featured their own titles.
Still, the number of prizes available to the women of WWE are limited to just those singles titles. With more and more tag team matches happening within the two women’s divisions, why not add a new title, and finally go ahead with the Women’s Tag Team Championships?
It’s been rumored for some time, and potential designs for the belts themselves have leaked online. The women’s division is gearing up towards their historic pay per view, Evolution, and the idea of crowning a brand new champion at the event has to be alluring for WWE.
In fact, the only thing left is to try and figure out just who could be considered to challenge for such a championship. While there’s no limit to how many teams WWE would book into a theoretical tournament or multi-team match to establish the champions, let’s limit it to eight. And we’ll group them based on how probable their inclusion would be.

If you’re doing a tag team tournament, it’s essential to get the actual, established tag teams in there. Imagine doing a tag title tournament in the 1980s and leaving out Demolition or the Brain Busters. By my count, there are five legitimate tag teams split between the Raw and SmackDown rosters.
Let’s start with the two teams on SmackDown. Up first is The IIconics, and if Peyton Royce and Billie Kay somehow have to sit this tourney out, it’s absurd. They would be joined by Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose, formerly known as Absolution. The relative rookies would face a steep challenge in the tournament, but they work exceedingly well together as a team.
On Monday nights, the obvious two teams are Sasha Banks & Bayley, and the Riott Squad. If the match for the titles is taking place at Evolution, the mostly likely pair of Riotters to team up would be Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan. I mean, Ruby Riott would have to have some other match on the card somewhere, right?
The fifth team? The Bella Twins. Since we’re figuring on this match taking place at Evolution, it would be doubtful that Nikki and Brie would make it past the first round, since odds are they’d have a higher profile match, or a pair of singles matches instead. But to keep this hypothetical tournament as competitive as possible, The Bellas have to be involved.

Likely
With five of eight spots taken up already, we get to the less established teams, but those with enough of a relationship that teaming together wouldn’t be out of place. There’s two teams that fit this bill: Naomi & Asuka on SmackDown, and Mickie James & Alicia Fox on Raw.
Naomi and Asuka recently joined forces in the face of a common enemy in The IIconics, so tagging together shouldn’t be a problem. However, one would assume that a “bigger” match — especially for Asuka — would be more desirable.as for James and Fox, their relationship was borne out of a common friend in Alexa Bliss.

Longshot
Now that we’ve taken all the “real” tag teams, and added in some new creations, we only have one spot left in our imaginary tournament. There’s a bunch of different ways the last spot could go, whether a team from NXT, some legends, a random pairing of superstars, or a little of everything.

A possible team I’ve seen mentioned is Beth Phoenix and Natalya, but I don’t think it’s happening. The only way I see a legend being part of this championship bracket is if the whole thing happens in one night. If we’re adding the Bellas to lose early to set up other matches at Evolution, then we’re talking multi-nights, and no Beth.
If NXT is represented, the pairing would be mostly random. No teams, per se, exist in the Full Sail women’s division. Dakota Kai and Kairi Sane, maybe — but Sane is defending the NXT Women’s Championship. Bianca Belair is too much of a loner to team with anyone. Maybe Nikki Cross could somehow get involved — she was on stage during the Evolution announcement on Raw this summer — but who would she team with?
The most likely scenario is a random pairing, putting Nikki Cross with someone from the main roster. I don’t see her teaming with Natalya, Carmella (who’s recently kind of turned face after the whole R-Truth/Miz thing), or any of the heels. So who does that leave? Ember Moon.
I think the dynamic of Ember Moon & Nikki Cross could be a great thing to enter into this race for the Women’s Tag Team Championships. It will help establish Cross on the main roster, and her style meshes with Ember’s pretty well.
So there you have it: Eight possible teams to vie for the much anticipated WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. Who do you think could take the titles?
