Tokyo Dome Main Event Contract Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Jay White
What a year it’s been for Jay White. He started it by losing to the Ace in a somewhat lackluster match. After January 4th, he joined Chaos, won the US Championship, and quietly went about his business for the next few months. Then, Switchblade set the world on fire in the G1, beating Tanahashi and Okada in back to back nights and coming oh so close to winning his block.
After such a strong G1 showing, White knew it was his time to make some noise. At DESTRUCTION in Kobe, after the main event of Okada vs Tanahashi, he made his move, attacking both guys and completing his turn on Chaos alongside a new, villainous Gedo. Now, nine months after their first meeting, rugged veteran Tanahashi is set defend the company’s honor against this young, vile, insubordinate Switchblade.
Before Kobe, I wouldn’t have given Jay White the tiniest sliver of a chance to win here, but now that it’s clear just how serious NJPW is about his push, I think he has a shot. It’s extremely unlikely, but who knows? Maybe they’re crazy enough to do it. Still, I’m sticking with The Ace here. As awesome as the Switchblade has been since the G1, he and his character still have plenty of room to grow before he main events Wrestle Kingdom.
