Rey Mysterio Should Make Surprise 205 Live Appearances
Rey Mysterio Can Raise 205 Live’s Profile
205 Live has moved from being broadcasted post-SmackDown Live at 10 p.m. ET on the WWE Network to being aired at 7 p.m. ET before NXT on Wednesdays. The switch has been beneficial to 205 thus far, as the show is garnering more views from network subscribers post-time change.
Whenever a 205 Live match is on a Pay Per View, it tends to be remembered as one of the best matches of the show. Even dating back to the pre-Triple H days of the show, Neville vs. Jack Gallagher was the best match at Fastlane 2016. This year, Cedric Alexander and Mustafa Ali had a solid Cruiserweight Tournament finals match on the WrestleMania 34 pre-show, Alexander and Drew Gulak outdid that on the SummerSlam pre-show, and Buddy Murphy and Alexander had one of the best matches of the night at WWE Super Show-Down.
With Murphy as the new Cruiserweight Champion, 205 Live is headed for a year of change. Babyfaces like Ali will hope to dethrone Murphy, who won the title in his home country after kicking out of the previously unstoppable “Lumbar Check”, owned by a champion who seemed invulnerable before that loss.
That means Murphy himself could have enough credibility to face a guy like Mysterio in a one-off match. Other wrestlers on the roster, such as Gulak and Alexander, would undoubtedly put together classics with Mysterio. And can you imagine Hideo Itami vs. Rey?
We’ve seen wrestlers from NXT make one-off appearances on 205 and vice versa. Tony Nese recently had a match with Johnny Gargano, TJP once shined against Shinsuke Nakamura, and we saw Roderick Strong tear it up in the Cruiserweight Championship Tournament earlier this year.
But we haven’t seen enough cross-over between main roster and Cruiserweight Division stars, ever since 205 became exclusive to the Network and stopped appearing on Raw. While that was, in general, a change for the better, it would be awesome to see someone like Mysterio make surprise appearances to pop 205’s viewership and give its rising stars a boost. 205 is a special show, and it’ll get more of the recognition it’s earned with a guy like Mysterio occasionally appearing on a show that is now pre-taped.
