WWE: Attitude Era Stars Like DX and Undertaker Boost Special Events
By David Joseph
Monday Night On Raw the long speculated HBK returned was confirmed. At WWE Crown Jewel it Will be DX vs Undertaker and Kane. Many have been begging for an HBK return but did not expect so under these circumstances. Still, the coal minority seems to dislike the idea of four older wrestlers getting the spotlight.
A very hard pill to swallow is that WWE fans are often times the most ungrateful fan base you can find. Sports Entertainment might be the only genre where people get upset at legends returning. More importantly a portion of the audience does not understand age is only a number in the entertainment world.
Does it make sense for a hip hop fan to be mad if Drake (31 years old) & Jay Z (48) were performing at the same show? Yes Drake is a top artist now. However, Jay Z is a pioneer of rap. He has a proven body of work that can still get fans on their feet. The same applies to pro wrestling.
Everyone is aware of the fact that all four men are past their primes. They are still a draw to the casual fan. See, the casual fans wait for the big events and comebacks. Like it or not, nostalgia sells in wrestling. People like to see who they watched as a child.
WWE wants to hook those fans back into watching and or subscribing to WWE Network. Undertaker vs Triple H at Super Show Down showed us that these guys can still have an audience invested heavily. Now the company is following up on that clash with an epic tag team match.
Additionally, The format of a tag team match will cover any limitations these WWE superstars might have. Bottom Line is Kane, Undertaker, Triple H, and HBK draw people into the building. The current top guys like The Shield, Braun Strowman, and Aj Styles are supposed to keep people in the building. The average Joe will not know who Samoa Joe is but even people who do not watch wrestling know the legends.
WWE deserves a lot more credit for giving their fan base the best of both worlds. The current stars display the excellent work rate and athleticism. Meanwhile the part timers bring the old school storytelling and phenomenal character work. That is not to say the current stars do not tell a good story. Though for the most part they rely on the acrobatics more than psychology.
As the times change so does the business model for WWE. A smart company adapts. The current business model emphasizes getting network subscriptions. On the WWE network are stars of the past. It is important that the OG’s return to remind every one of their greatness in the squared circle. Plus, imagine the amount of new DX and Undertaker merchandise that will get sold during this build. In the end the numbers that really matter is the money, not that ages. Crown Jewel will be another vintage classic by these four titans.
