The Road to Power Struggle continued with nights three and four of NJPW Super Jr Tag League. Shingo and Bushi tested themselves against savvy veterans Liger and Tiger, the champs tried to bounce back against Taguchi and ACH, Time Machine went up against CMLL’s Volador and Soberano in a clash of styles, and Ishimori and Eagles faced RPG 3k in a battle of two of the league’s favorites…

Shingo Takagi & BUSHI vs Jyushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask

Bushi and Liger lock up to begin. Rope break and Bushi taunts and runs the ropes. Tiltawhirl backbreaker. Tags. Shingo and Tiger Mask trade chops. Tiger lands some kicks and tags Liger back in. Full nelson/dropkick combo and BUSHI’s forced to make the save. All four men brawl on the outside and LIJ gets the advantage.

The Ingobernables work over Liger as he looks for the tag. They go for a double suplex, but it’s reversed into DDTs and Tiger Mask tags in. Crucifix powerbomb. Shingo kicks out, but Tiger follows up with an an armbar/triangle choke. The Dragon fires up and reverses the submission into a DVD. Tag to Bushi. He runs off some offense, but eventually the momentum swings back and my dads hit the Liger bomb/Tiger driver combo.

Up for the super Tiger suplex, but Shingo stops it and suplexes both old feline men at the same time. He goes for a big lariat, but Liger moves and sends him tumbling out of the ring. Rebound lariat from BUSHI and he runs the ropes, but Tiger Mask catches him with a cradle out of nowhere for the big upset.

Liger & Tiger def LIJ

Everything was pretty spot on here up until the finish, which felt somewhat clunky and awkward. Still, although the finish is important, it’s not all that matters. The large majority of this match was super solid and told an interesting story, with the crafty veterans giving Shingo his biggest test yet.

I was expecting Liger and Tiger to be an afterthought in this Tag League, so it’s cool that they’re starting off so strong. Definitely a welcome surprise. On the other side of things, it’s unfortunate that BUSHI continues to be portrayed as such a liability, but that’s just how this team is going to be so I guess I’ll just have to get used to it.
