WWE: Can WrestleMania Truly Be Special Anymore?

This year, WWE has inundated fans with event after event filled with headline-grabbing matches. With ticket sales for WrestleMania 35 beginning in just under two weeks, has WWE already painted themselves into a corner when it comes to the main event at The Grandest Stage of Them All?

In the past several months, WWE hasn’t been shy in giving us headline worthy matches. From the return of Shawn Michaels at Crown Jewel to an instant classic between Becky Lynch and Charlotte at Evolution, it seems like fans have been able to witness to some of the biggest matches WWE can make.

WWE isn’t done making those explosive matches yet, however. At Survivor Series, we’re getting a technical wrestling fan’s dream match between Seth Rollins and Shinsuke Nakamura along with arguably the biggest women’s wrestling match the company can make when Becky Lynch takes on Ronda Rousey.

That’s all fine and dandy, undoubtedly everybody loves to get exciting, newsworthy matches month after month, except that now WWE has a problem on it’s hands.

With WrestleMania 35 tickets and travel packages on sale soon, what dream matches are left to headline the company’s biggest show?

To start, there’s practically no surprise part-timers left for WWE to pull out of retirement this year.

Triple H has already been a part of two huge wars with The Undertaker and Kane at WWE’s last two super shows. On top of that, if WWE’s announcement holds true, The Game may be out of commission for several months with a torn pectoral muscle. This would obviously put any long-term stories WWE may have been planning for Triple H on hold, given the fact he likely won’t be able to mix it up in the ring until around a month or so before WrestleMania at best.

Additionally, Shawn Michaels appears to have decided to re-hangup his boots after Crown Jewel, referring to his tag match at the event as a “cheat day” from his retirement in a recent WWE video.

Perhaps WWE could finally bring back Batista for a final match at WrestleMania 35, yet even that idea now seems like somewhat of a long shot given the lack of promotion WWE has done for his face-off with Triple H at Smackdown 1000.

That leaves WWE with only The Undertaker left to fill the eternal role as part-time main event star at WrestleMania. Unfortunately, to put it lightly, The Undertaker has been far from impressive in the ring lately. He’s oftentimes looked like a shell of his former self, relying on the history of rivalries past to fuel the excitement in his matches today.

As such, in my opinion, WWE would be better off keeping The Undertaker in a role similar to that of his at Wrestlemania 34 anyways. A quick match that showcases what fans love the best about The Deadman without leaving enough time for those fans to see how little he has left in him for feature length matches.

This lack of surprising returning stars wouldn’t necessarily mean WWE had a problem though. That is, if it weren’t for the fact that most of the biggest matches WWE could make for their full-time stars had already been, or soon will be, seen this year on shows other than WrestleMania.

Recently, Daniel Bryan squared off against AJ Styles for the WWE title, a dream match for many even though it was given the opening spot on Smackdown due to, shall we say, political issues surrounding their original match time.

Combine that with the fact we are about to see the two most popular female stars fight at Survivor Series when Ronda Rousey takes on Becky Lynch, and you see how little WWE has left themselves to work with.

Sure, an argument could be made that Charlotte versus Ronda Rousey and Braun Strowman versus Drew McIntyre are both main event worthy matches yet to have been seen, but do those really hold a candle to the great matches we’ve already witnessed this year?

At the end of the day, it will be interesting to see if WWE has any rabbits left to pull out of their hats for the WrestleMania 35 main event. They might end up having to work some magic if they truly want this coming WrestleMania to feel like The Grandest Stage of Them All.
