205 Live: Cedric Alexander vs. Lio Rush

Isn’t it telling that in a week where we saw Daniel Bryan defeat AJ Styles for the WWE Championship in the main event of SmackDown Live just days before an impending clash with Brock Lesnar, a 205 Live match was still the match of the week?

Honestly, that shows you just how consistent 205 Live is as a brand. Last week, we saw Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy dazzle against the always-entertaining Mark Andrews, but this week’s match between Cedric Alexander and Lio Rush may have topped that effort.

Every week he’s in the ring, Rush manages to make himself must-see, and he might be the Cruiserweight Division’s next rising star. The trio of Murphy, Alexander, and Cruiserweight Championship challenger Mustafa Ali are the three centerpieces of the brand, but Rush has joined Drew Gulak as critical components of the Wednesday evening show.

Rush and Alexander traded a few highlights here, and the final sequences of the match were especially spectacular. We saw Rush hit a lovely springboard stunner on Alexander, but even that cool move paled in comparison to his sell of Alexander’s devastating “Lumbar Check” finisher. I mean, Rush essentially bounced off of Alexander’s knees as if he were dead weight, flopping to the canvas in a way that would make even Dolph Ziggler envious.

If you have time, go out of your way to watch this match, because it was a gem.
