WWE NXT TakeOver: New York Moved To Friday On WrestleMania Weekend
It has been reported that WWE NXT TakeOver: New York will be moved to the Friday of WrestleMania weekend from the previously scheduled date of Saturday, April 6.
As first announced by Twitter user @collarxelbowWWE and confirmed by Fightful.com, WWE has announced that they will be moving NXT TakeOver: New York to the Friday before WrestleMania from the previously scheduled date of Saturday, April 6.
WWE responded to rumors that NXT TakeOver was being moved due to the event falling on the same date as Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling’s monumental G1 Supercard, that had quickly sold out Madison Square Garden.
WWE would have once again gone head-to-head with G1, as they did last year with NXT TakeOver: New Orleans and Ring of Honor’s Supercard of Honor XII, and it’s not a reach to think WWE would have not wanted to go through that odreal, again.
Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp reached out to WWE, and WWE released this statement, in return:
"“WWE will be going back to its previous WrestleMania Week schedule with NXT TakeOver on Friday, April 5 and the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, April 6. We believe this better serves our fans.”"
WWE confirmed that NXT TakeOver: New York will indeed be set for the Friday before WrestleMania, while the Hall of Fame ceremony will still be set for Saturday, April 6.
The move, at best, looks like an attempt to make sure fans will see all the wrestling their hearts desire that weekend. The move, at worst, also looks like an attempt from WWE to prevent competition from Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling, who with high attendance rates, appear as if they would be able to “steal” viewers and attendance from WWE’s flagship events.
