Asuka VS Emma (2017)

For the second year in a row there would be two women’s matches at TLC in 2017. The then-undefeated Asuka was to make her main roster debut at TLC after two years of utter domination in NXT, so to say there was a lot of hype behind this show opener that pitted the Empress of Tomorrow against Emma would be an understatement.

So much was resting on Asuka’s shoulders this night that no one saw the outstanding performance by Emma coming out of left field. These two women had met before in NXT and had infectious chemistry, something that still held up for this encounter. It was the type of fast-paced, hard-hitting action that a show opener is supposed to be and, despite her sudden release not long after, it was perhaps Tenille Dashwood’s greatest performance as Emma.

But Asuka more than held up her end, too. She was at her best here, giving a larger than life performance that stands as a testament to any argument supporting her going over in the triple threat TLC match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at this year’s show.

Alexa Bliss VS Mickie James for the Raw Women’s Title (2017)

The final match on my TLC women’s wrestling trip down memory lane was last year’s Raw Women’s Championship match between Alexa Bliss and Mickie James, and it was even more fantastic than I remembered. In fact, there were so many interesting aspects to this match that it was bound to do well with the crowd.

Alexa had been verbally bullying Mickie James, as she would do months later to Nia Jax, though this story tackled ageism rather than weight shame. Mickie was particularly upset because Alexa, who was responsible in storylines for bringing Mickie back to WWE, was once her close friend. This was a short feud that culminated in this match only to see the two inexplicably reunited months later, but the payoff was big and the audience loved every second of what was one of Mickie’s biggest matches since returning to the company.

While Mickie James – who only gets better with age – was the challenger and came up short, the real story here was Alexa Bliss and how far the “Goddess of WWE” had come in just one short year. She oozes confidence throughout this entire match, never failing to remind us why she’s seen as the modern day Trish Stratus. Though she had only won her first title a year earlier Alexa was already a four-time champion and competing in what turned out to be TLC’s best women’s wrestling match (so far).

As you can see, TLC has been pretty darn kind to the women of WWE. Even in some of the darkest days of the Divas division TLC has always been host to at least one women’s match. The show has seen some pretty pivotal moments in the evolution of WWE women’s wrestling and hopefully this year will be no different. With Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey and SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch both defending in big matches at 2018’s show, the powerful history of female WWE Superstars at TLC lives on.
