Can WWE Creatively Handle Booking Becky Lynch Long-Term?

In the latter half of 2018, the amount of praise and respect Becky Lynch has garnered from fans and peers alike for her work as SmackDown Women’s Champion has propelled her to super-stardom. Will WWE use Becky Lynch’s new found success to its fullest potential or let the flame die out and miss a golden opportunity in the process?

It seems like it was only yesterday that Becky Lynch was considered to be just another underrated WWE superstar with all the talent in the world and  no fluorescent future to show for it.

Given the fact that the rise of “The Man” didn’t start until a few months ago, the statement kind of rings true.

Fortunately, the days of Lynch being an underrated and underutilized performer are long gone as evident by her recent reign as WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion.

The million dollar question now is whether or not the WWE will use Lynch’s new found success to its fullest potential, or will they mistakenly let the flame die out and miss a golden opportunity in the process?

Since the start of the Women’s Revolution there have been a number of female competitors that fans have gotten behind or favored. This includes, but isn’t limited to the usual suspects: performers like Sasha Banks, Ember Moon, Bayley, and Asuka are often example given of WWE mishandling continuous success of their most popular female superstars.

For a multitude of fans, these ladies have not gotten the proper push they so rightfully deserve. Until recently, including Lynch’s name on the list above would have been a no-brainer for most, but as stated before, those days are behind us.

On the upside of things, this seems to be just the beginning of Lynch’s resurgence.

She successfully defended her title against Charlotte Flair at WWE Evolution. She was scheduled to face current WWE Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey at WWE’s Survivor Series Pay Per View before her injury. Plus, she recently made history by becoming the first woman to top ESPN’s WWE Power Rankings.

At this point, Lynch isn’t just some run-of-the-mill, one hit wonder. She’s established herself as one of WWE’s most popular superstars and has been compared to the likes of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

It’s been said that sometimes WWE drops the ball with the direction of their talent, other times, they hit it out of the park. But to sour on a superstar with this much potential would be foolish to say the very least.

In less than two weeks, “The Man” looks to defend her Smackdown Women’s Championship against Asuka and Charlotte Flair in the company’s first ever women’s TLC match.

If she wins, that’s great. If she doesn’t, this does not necessarily mean Lynch will go back to being an undervalued, underrated pro-wrestler, who’d be better off finding more creative success in a promotion that understands the value of their talent and utilizes it.

On the other hand, the fact that WWE has a knack for capitalizing on the popularity of their female superstars for only a short breadth of time may indicate that they’re still not creatively capable for booking Becky Lynch long-term.

Whether they’re capable or not, they need to be, because to strike gold like Becky Lynch has is a truly special thing, and she deserves to flourish well into 2019 and beyond.
