Nia Jax is Reclaiming Momentum
Last week, WWE took a stumble on their presentation of Nia Jax. The “Irresistible Force” followed up weeks of boasting about breaking Becky Lynch’s face with goofing around and doing a playground impersonation of Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey. It was cringe-worthy to see Nia this far outside her comfort zone as a TV persona, and it displayed poor and sloppy guidance by the company.
This week was much better, though. Backstage, Jax spoke to Charly Caruso with extreme lows and highs in sheer volume and it was enough to transform the segment into a chilling promo. The woman who calls herself the “face breaker” actually came off quite threatening, and even though we can all pretty safely place bets on “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey leaving TLC with the Raw Women’s Title in tow, the mountain she’ll have to climb to make that happen just got taller.
Nia Jax and Tamina Snuka fought in a losing effort this week on Raw in a tag team match against Rousey and Ember Moon, who replaced the previously incapacitated Natalya as Rousey’s partner. Rousey won the match by making Tamina tap out, and because we all knew Tamina was going to serve that purpose at some point in this rivalry, it was a pretty unsurprising and underwhelming way to end the match.
Still, with the progress of Nia Jax’s heel character this week, the title match at TLC has some new steam, and besides, the real story is how Rousey moves on from here to getting revenge on Charlotte Flair.
