As a lapsed WWE fan, the news of Sami Zayn’s apparently-immininent return is the most excited I’ve been about the main roster product since Evolution.

WWE Superstar Sami Zayn was sidelined in June after tearing both rotator cuffs, requiring bilateral shoulder surgery, and though his return was initially pencilled for around February time, it looks likely that he’ll be back a little sooner than expected.

But while news of his return is undoubtedly exciting, the seasoned Sami Zayn fan will struggle to forgive and forget WWE’s continual underutilisation of one of their most versatile and consistently high-performing wrestlers. Despite debuting in 2016, Sami is yet to hold a title on the main roster, and has found himself frequently mired in the background of the midcard scene with little in the way of meaningful storyline action.

His heel turn and subsequent push seemed  to indicate that WWE brass were finally ready to pay attention to Sami Zayn, but while Sami excelled in his heel role – who knew a pair of reading glasses were such an effective comedic prop? – some felt that it was a misstep to divest Sami of his career babyface status. Despite Sami’s increased visibility, it still felt as though he was ultimately playing second fiddle to Kevin Owens.

Though Zayn was given ample opportunity to show how good he is on the mic, this proved to be a double-edged sword when he was given garbage to work with – whoever wrote the Bobby Lashley’s Sisters segment should be fired from a cannon directly into the sea.

So in light of Zayn’s imminent return to our screens, here are a few ways WWE might better utilise him in 2019.
