2. Midcard Gold

It’s probably asking too much to shoot Sami straight up into the Universal Championship scene, particularly while Mr. Undefeatable Brock Lesnar retains his tenacious grip on the belt. But Sami has proven beyond doubt that he’s got the minerals for a title run.

With the surprisingly lukewarm reception to the ongoing Seth Rollins/Dean Ambrose feud, it could well be time to bring someone new into the equation – and Sami will surely be fired up and ready to go by the time he returns.

It’s baffling to think that a brief run with the NXT Championship is Sami’s primary achievement during his WWE tenure even to this day. His journey from enthusiastic NXT rookie to the heart and soul of the black and yellow brand won him the adoration of legions of fans; his hard-won victory over Neville saw Full Sail erupt in pure, unashamed joy.

The fans aren’t alone in recognising Sami’s worth. Kenny Omega named him as the wrestler who inspired him to reach new creative heights; Omega has said before that he often sought Sami’s stamp of approval back when they wrestled together.

If one of the very best wrestlers in the world names Sami Zayn as a key inspiration, then surely WWE must have an inkling of the kind of talent they’re sleeping on.

A championship run is long overdue for Sami. What better way to welcome him back to the main roster than with a bite at the Intercontinental Championship cherry? (And if the wrestling gods are feeling extra kind, perhaps they might let him win a few matches with the Blue Thunder Bomb to boot?)

But while there are several potentially amazing feuds Sami could have on RAW (Finn Balor, anyone?) there’s no reason he should be limited to the red brand.
