Intercontinental Championship: Seth Rollins

One could make the argument that Seth Rollins has been the superstar of the year in 2018 in the WWE.  He was as consistent as any superstar on the roster, but his work throughout the year as the Intercontinental Champion was particularly impressive.

Roman Reigns began 2018 with the championship before dropping it to The Miz.  But at WrestleMania 34, The A-Lister succumbed to The Architect in a Triple Threat Match along with Finn Balor and Rollins became the Intercontinental Champion.  Rollins retained his title at the Greatest Royal Rumble in a Fatal 4-Way Ladder Match and followed it up with a string of outstanding matches.

Rollins and Balor tore the house down on the April 30 edition of Raw before Rollins retained, only to defend the title at Backlash in another superb match with The Miz.  The Architect defended his title many more times in the coming weeks before dropping the title to Dolph Ziggler on the June 18 edition of Raw.  This helped launch a feud between the two that would carry over through the fall with Rollins gaining the championship back at SummerSlam.

The Architect kept the Intercontinental Championship until TLC where his former Shield brother turned bitter enemy Dean Ambrose took the title from him.  There’s no other way to put it, Rollins was the best Intercontinental Champion in 2018 by a fairly large margin.  His reign from SummerSlam through TLC wasn’t particularly handled well, but his work through the first half of 2018 was something very special.

In an era where the Universal Championship is basically meaningless on Monday nights, Rollins held the show together for a while with his work as Intercontinental Champion.
