If 2018 was your first time seeing Bayley, you might be wondering if there’s more to her than hugs and relationship issues with Sasha Banks. Contrary to the hectic year she’s had, the superstar who has taken pride in being “Just Bayley” is a former NXT Women’s Champion, 2015’s NXT Female Competitor of the Year, and a former Raw Women’s Champion. It all sounds great, but Bayley’s character just hasn’t found a groove since moving up from NXT.
In 2018, it seemed like the most important thing to Bayley was Sasha Banks. The year started with the longtime friends having issues after Sasha eliminated Bayley at the Royal Rumble. Then at Elimination Chamber, Sasha took a cheap moment to screw Bayley yet again. In the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal, the scene was set once again. Sasha and Bayley managed to put aside their differences and eliminate several competitors together until it looked like it was just Sasha and Bayley left.
Banks offered a hug, and Bayley responded by chunking Sasha over the top. It would’ve been a huge win, but Naomi had yet to be eliminated. Naomi hit Bayley with the Rear View and eliminated her to take the win in the first-ever WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal. She was so close to that big moment, but it slipped away.
Sasha and Bayley’s issues would continue to escalate throughout the year, but they eventually reconciled and joined forces once again. In recent weeks, they’ve been building a resume to make their case to become the first ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. It’s a meaningful goal, but even that kind of accolade doesn’t lessen the allure of the Royal Rumble. If Bayley can outlast everyone in this year’s Women’s Rumble, she could finally punch her ticket to WrestleMania and capture the moment and gold she’s been hoping for.
