WWE’s new “fresh start” is supposed to be all about new faces, but what about 2018’s new faces? There were several superstars who were new to Raw and SmackDown Live in the last year that are still looking for their golden opportunities. Perhaps none fit that bill better than Raw’s Ember Moon. The native of Garland, Texas had her biggest NXT moment when she captured the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: WarGames in her home state of Texas.
After a 140-day reign as champion, Moon came up short against Shayna Baszler at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans. She didn’t have time to mourn the loss, as Moon debuted on Monday Night Raw only days later. Since coming to the main roster, she’s had some big wins here and there and come very close to finding a foothold in that top-tier of female superstars on Raw. Now all Ember Moon needs is an opportunity, and there’s no bigger opportunity than the Royal Rumble.
While fans might assume Moon would go after fellow Raw superstar Ronda Rousey for the Raw Women’s Championship, there’s some unfinished business worth mentioning here. During her tenure in NXT, there was only one thing Ember never managed to do. She never defeated Asuka. Despite more than one attempt, Moon could not dethrone The Empress of Tomorrow. It wasn’t until after Asuka had moved to Raw and relinquished the belt that Moon was able to capture it.
Then-NXT Women’s Champion Ember Moon was even a surprise entrant in the 2018 Women’s Royal Rumble, only to be eliminated by Asuka. While Ember got a modicum of revenge at Evolution by eliminating Asuka from the battle royal, she’s still yet to hit the Eclipse and pin Asuka in the ring. If Ember can outlast her opponents, she can punch her ticket to WrestleMania and vanquish Asuka once and for all.
