5. Rhea Ripley
Last year, Rhea Ripley was introduced to our screens as one of the standouts of the Mae Young Classic. She stood out much in the same way during this year’s Mae Young Classic, except in the past year, Ripley seems to have gone through a drastic character change.
In a year’s time, the native Aussie not only went bad, but adopted a punk rock savvy look. The new look has done wonders for Ripley as it took her to the semi-finals of the MYC tournament and afforded her the privilege of becoming NXT UK’s inaugural Women’s Champion.
The Moshpit Kid has become one of the rare modern heels who never break character even when the cameras stop rolling. Her social media is littered with in-character, volatile tweets directed against her opponents. She especially has a lot of nasty ones against Tegan Nox, including an avi spotlighting Nox’s injury.
Speaking of said injury, Ripley is most memorable for her tournament match with Nox where the Shiniest Wizard suffered a legitimate injury. Despite the gravity of the situation, Ripley refused to break character for a second. Now that’s what we call a true professional.
While she may not have been the best heel of the year, she most certainly ranks up there as the most improved Superstar of the year. Let’s keep an eye on her for 2019.
