Raw Sleeps Through The Holidays

Raw wasn’t much better, if I’m being totally honest, but Raw’s problems stem from a lack of creativity more than outright omission of its female Superstars. Yes, Ronda Rousey defended her Raw Women’s Title against Natalya in a great match. I’ve said before that Natalya has been doing some of her best work lately and this match was no exception. The crowd was behind her, but ultimately Natalya failed to take full advantage of her opportunity and tapped out to Ronda’s armbar.

The match itself wasn’t the issue, but it was all so predictable and there were no swerves as some of us thought there might be. Again, these Holiday editions of Raw and SmackDown rarely seem to advance storylines to any notable degree but WWE really dug its heels into the ground this week.

There was a six-woman tag team match that saw Bayley, Sasha Banks and Ember Moon beat Alicia Fox, Mickie James and Dana Brooke, and when you see a six-person tag team match it’s a giant red flag that the writers couldn’t be bothered to care. It’s the reason Teddy Long’s SmackDown was so boring for so many years and the very reason I loathe this type of match.

The biggest thing to take away from Raw this week was Vince McMahon (as Mr. McMahon-ta Claus) officially announcing the creation of a tag team titles for the women’s division. Despite the fact that we’ve known this was coming for a while now, it’s still exciting news and I can’t wait to see which team is in line as the first champions.
