11. Backlash

Backlash is one of the oldest pay-per-views in WWE history with a history dating back to the late-1990’s.  However, in 2018, Backlash was in a precarious situation from the start with more focus being put on a show that happened no more than two weeks prior to it.

The Greatest Royal Rumble event took place on April 27th with Backlash taking place on May 6th, but the shows weren’t treated as equals with the Greatest Royal Rumble taking more precedence.  It showed in how Backlash turned out, although the opening match between Seth Rollins and The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship was considered one of the best matches of the year.

However, there really wasn’t anything else that stood out on this card.  Nia Jax vs. Alexa Bliss was so-so, Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton was so-so, Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass was pretty good, and Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair was pretty good.  A match that had plenty of buzz was AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship in a no disqualification match, but even it fell flat in the end.

In a match contested under no DQ rules, both men got counted out and the match ended in a draw.  And then there was the lackluster main event between Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe that nobody bought into from the start.  Overall, this was just a decent pay-per-view offering by the WWE and it did nothing to continue the theme of overall stellar pay-per-views in 2018.

From top to bottom, Backlash 2018 wasn’t nearly a memorable enough show to stand out in a crowded 2018 pay-per-view lineup.
