1. John Cena returns to WWE TV, yet his Royal Rumble future remains uncertain
The most anticipated segment on this week’s episode of Raw is almost assuredly John Cena’s return to WWE television.
While Cena is not currently advertised on WWE’s preview for the show, his return this Monday night has been advertised on WWE’s twitter. Therefore, we should likely expect the leader of the “Cenation” to make some kind of appearance, pre-recorded or otherwise, on New Year’s Eve.
Cena has been missing in action in WWE for some time now, spending his time writing books and starring in Hollywood films instead of running the ropes in a wrestling ring. In fact, if my memory serves me correct, the last time we saw Cena on WWE was in a pre-recorded message for SmackDown 1000.
No matter what your opinion of John Cena is, you likely have to admit a certain level of intrigue or excitement in seeing his return to WWE Raw and SmackDown.
That’s right, Cena was announced as being a superstar of both brands, meaning we will also be getting an appearance from the former “Doctor of Thuganomics” on SmackDown this week as well.
Right now, in spite of his impending back-to-back appearances, Cena’s future in WWE is hazy at best. Rumors have abound whether or not Cena will even appear at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in 2019.
As a result, I expect WWE to keep Cena’s first-time back as a relatively low key outing. Cena will likely cut a promo about how happy he is to be back in WWE, leading to some directionless heel on Raw or Smackdown, Bobby Lashley comes to mind right now, decrying his return in their own promo.
Cena will then hit the attitude adjustment on said heel at one of his next televised dates, and maybe even the dreaded “Sixth Move of Doom”, in order to formally set up a small rivalry.
That rivalry could either then send him into the Royal Rumble, if WWE can enlist his services, or will simply serve as a future opponent for a Raw match come Cena’s next extended run, similar to what we saw occur with his feud with Elias earlier this year.
Either way, it’s always good to see Cena back in WWE, no matter for how long. Hopefully he sticks around for The Royal Rumble, but if not, this next set of appearances will nevertheless prove to be a fun diversion to the otherwise serious rivalries on WWE Raw and SmackDown currently.
At the end of the day, or year as it turns out, WWE will likely be able to keep the momentum from their “fresh start” going, as we quickly enter a new year of WWE television.
