Mayu Iwatani

Women’s wrestling has taken over the industry in the eyes of many. The women are continuously out-working the men and putting on some of the best matches, night in and night out. Therefore, it is important for AEW to sign some of the best female performers on the independent circuit. While the WWE continues to snatch up talent for its Mae Young Classic series, there’s one name that was left from the list; Mayu Iwatani.

As the WWE continues to pick up some of the best female Japanese wrestlers in names such as Io Shirai and Asuka; Iwatani is a name that can not only match them – but any other woman in the game today. While the WWE has Shirai and Kairi Sane on the roster; Iwatani is widely considered to be the third member of what was a trio of top competitors in wrestling.

What Iwatani is known for is a stiff striking style that includes knees, elbows and punches. Imagine a style that’s along the lines of Samoa Joe and Asuka. That is the exact type of style that has become more popular on the American independent scene and Iwatani would fit in perfectly. She’s unique when compared to many of the women in the industry today and that uniqueness would help her keep fans engaged.

Many expect AEW to elevate names such as Brandi Rhodes and the recently signed Britt Baker. Adding Iwatani to that equation would not only help either of those women, but any of the others that are added in the future. Iwatani may have been overlooked by the WWE and Ring of Honor – as she was featured in the tournament to crown the first Women of Honor champion – she could easily be a central figure of the AEW roster to stand toe to toe with any man or woman added to the promotion.
