The Empress of Not Much, Really

So Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte Flair and Carmella in a scintillating triple threat match on SmackDown to earn the right to challenge Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at Royal Rumble.

It was an awesome match with an awesome outcome, and even if it sort of makes the death of the automatic rematch for former champions pointless it certainly shows that WWE has, rightfully, not lost faith in Becky Lynch.

In fact, this could perhaps be a bit of course correction because Becky now has a very good chance of heading into WrestleMania as the champ. Not that I am not completely in love with Asuka.

The Empress of Tomorrow has had me on board from day one, but for some reason Vince McMahon does not seem to be keen on her. Sure, she’s the SmackDown Women’s Champion now but I’m not sure WWE has any clue what to do with her.

Ever since winning the title back at TLC, Asuka has been largely missing in action. She’s been here and there for small bits of time but the SmackDown Women’s Title picture has taken a serious gut punch since WWE decided to switch the title to her from Becky.

I’m not saying Asuka can’t carry the women’s division because she absolutely can, but I have my doubts that WWE knows how to back her up. Hopefully they can figure it out going into the Rumble and if not then Becky can pick up the scraps of a lackluster title reign and set the place on fire again.
