WWE SmackDown Results, Highlights, And Grades For January 29, 2019
Absolution Promo
Kayla Braxton catches up with Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose backstage, and Absolution announces that they will be competing for the Women’s Tag Team Championships inside the Elimination Chamber. Wow, they didn’t have to get into a qualifying match either!
Mandy and Sonya try to reason that Mandy went after Naomi and tried to destroy her marriage…because Naomi ruined her life and her own relationship with some strong comments during Tough Enough…
Anyway…Absolution are among the favorites to win the Women’s Tag Titles next month, and, let’s be honest, they didn’t need a qualifying match.
WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships No. 1 Contender Match
The Bar vs. The New Day vs. The Usos vs. Heavy Machinery
Otis Dozovic and Tucker Knight are in there with three of the best tag teams in WWE, so this is a huge spot for the former NXT superstars to shine. It’s a four corners elimination match, and we get to see Kofi Kingston and Dozer having some fun sparring against each other to begin the match.
We see Shane and Miz watching the match from backstage as The Bar take control of the match, determined to win the titles back from Miz and Shane. Cesaro hit Jimmy Uso with a big suplex, tagging in Sheamus, who took out The New Day from the apron. That gave Jimmy just enough time to tag in Jey, who hit a big Samoan Drop.
Sheamus came in to take the fight to Big E, but he and Kofi got the better of him, nearly eliminating Sheamus before Cesaro broke up the pin. Big E and Cesaro both took each other out over the top rope, so Dozovic tagged in.
Dozovic plucked Kofi from out of the air, tagged in Tucker Knight, and then they both hit the compactor. Big E couldn’t break up the pin in time, so Heavy Machinery picked up a HUGE first elimination, taking The New Day out of the Fatal Four-Way.
Jey and Jimmy focused their attack on Heavy Machinery, but Cesaro tagged himself in for Jey. Both Sheamus and Cesaro double-team gorilla pressed Jey OVER the barricade shortly after Jimmy hit a dive to the outside to take out Knight and Dozovic! And we have a commercial break.
Sheamus and Knight trade blows after the break, and Corey Graves is STILL talking about Mandy Rose. This is just too much!
Anyway, Cesaro and Dozovic tag in, and Dozovic is absolutely bulldozing The Bar. He throws Cesaro with a huge overhead belly-to-belly, and he sees his opportunity to do “The Caterpillar”. Dozovic gets a close nearfall out of it, but Cesaro sure as heck won’t go out like that.
Dozovic tags Knight in, but they can’t hit the Compactor due to Sheamus’s interference. Heavy Machinery still hit a different double-team move, but Sheamus broke up the pin.
Knight hits a huge back-body drop on Cesaro but nearly gets eliminated with an Uso Splash. And we get a flurry of suprkicks from Jimmy, who has to tag out for Sheamus. And just then, Sheamus eliminates Heavy Machinery with a “Big Boot”.
Sheamus and Cesaro both go down to superkicks, Jimmy dives to the outside, and Jey flies for a splash and the “W”.
So it looks like we’re getting The Usos vs. Miz and Shane for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships, and Miz and Shane are definitely in trouble.
Grade: B+, Another fun match, the best tag team in the world won, and the SmackDown Tag Division remains supreme.
