AEW Signs Sonny Kiss

In terms of name recognition, Kenny Omega was technically AEW’s biggest signing announcement at the Double or Nothing “rally”, but Sonny Kiss was the biggest signing in terms of broader impact. Because, at the end of the day, nobody really expected Omega to end up anywhere else.

Kiss, however, was a pleasant surprise. Wrestling fans have been wondering if AEW will truly be an inclusive promotion that values its women’s division and equal representation in terms of race, gender, and sexual orientation. By signing Kiss, who is openly gay, they made an important step in that direction, and it gave wrestling fans hope that Brandi Rhodes and Co. are serious about representing everyone in AEW.

Here’s what he said at the “rally”, via Bleeding Cool:

"“So I hear AEW is for everyone. Well, Sonny Kiss is for everyone. So with that being said, I have some exciting news. I will be at Double or Nothing. While you may see me out there shakin’ my ass, you can guarantee on May 25th I’ll be kicking it too. And you can seal that with a kiss.”"

Beyond the statement about representation, AEW signed a special talent in Kiss, who gives the promotion an important edge over everybody else. Kiss is, by all accounts, an amazing person and an electrifying talent in the ring. With the platform that AEW can provide him, Sonny Kiss can become a breakout star in 2019 and beyond, earning an important place in the AEW roster. It’s telling that his signing came at the second “rally”, on a day where both Sammy Guevara and Kenny Omega were announced; that hints at how high AEW believes his ceiling is.

The “sky is the limit” cliche comes to mind when discussing Kiss, who has shined for Lucha Underground and Capitol Wrestling in his career thus far. AEW will be a big step on his path to greatness in this industry.
