WWE: Celebrating African-American Wrestlers Who Impacted Us

Candice Tinnon- When it comes to wrestling, the first person I think about during Black History Month is Booker T. It’s not like I was specifically looking for wrestlers of color when I was growing up. But, when I did see someone who looked a thing like me, it did have my immediate attention.
Booker T is one of those people that you really can’t miss – in the ring or outside the ring. His whole energy is something else. The second I heard his theme song, I was like, “Aww Snap.” I couldn’t wait to see him! I couldn’t wait to see him wrestle The Rock or get into a segment with Stone Cold Steve Austin!”
One of the first times I saw him was when he got into a fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin (another one of my favorite wrestlers) in a grocery store. I still get my life from that.
Now, around the time Booker T became King Booker, I was done. When I saw him in royal clothing with his crown on, I was like, “Are you serious?”
People of color aren’t usually looked at as Kings & Queens except by other people of color. So, When I look back at that era now, it really warms my heart.
He beat the odds. He beat all the odds of being as successful as he continues to be in the wrestling business to this very day.

Booker won virtually every championship in the WWF/E, WCW, and TNA (Impact). I’m quite sure him seeing the amount of doors he helped open for WWE Superstars such as Naomi, Bobby Lashley, as well all three members of The New Day has made him proud.
