6. vs. Cesaro & Tyson Kidd – 2 out of 3 Falls at Payback 2015

A month removed from defeating Tyson Kidd & Cesaro to win their very first taste of tag team gold, The New Day would have their very first title defense against the former champions at Payback. This time, both teams would settle their angst for each other in a 2 out of 3 Falls Match.

In addition to being The New Day’s first challengers for the Tag Team Titles, Cesaro and Tyson Kidd also gave The New Day their first major rivalry since forming their unit the fall beforehand. It is really a shame to think that Tyson Kidd would sustain a career ending injury just a couple of months after this match. Not only because him and Cesaro were really starting to get somewhere as a team, but their 2 out of 3 Falls Match showcased some exemplary chemistry against The New Day.

In their Payback match, both teams were able to provide an excellent balance between captivating technical wrestling that took its time to breath and high-octane action that had us on the edge of our seats. We would have loved to see these two teams go at it in another series of match, but alas, it just wasn’t to be.

The match would end when without the referee noticing, Xavier Woods (at the time, in a manager role) snuck into the match and rolled up Cesaro for a sneaky win. This would serve as the first of many nefarious wins for the trio back during their heel days.
