WWE: Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair Is Confusing But Probably Awesome

WWE Raw started with lots of questions about an already confusing women’s championship picture, and it got even more complicated. In a single moment backstage, Stephanie McMahon dropped an information bomb on the fans and confirmed a huge match for WWE Fastlane.

Update at 10:53pm ET: Right near the end of WWE Raw, Ronda Rousey reappeared and claimed her championship. Stephanie McMahon then decided we will still have Lynch vs. Flair at Fastlane. If Lynch wins it’ll be a triple threat between Flair, Lynch, and Rousey. If Lynch loses, she’s out of the match entirely.

Going into WWE Raw, Charlotte Flair had claimed she would hold a coronation ceremony to claim the Raw Women’s Championship after Ronda Rousey left the title laying in the ring last week. As shocking as Rousey leaving the belt at the feet of Stephanie McMahon was, it wasn’t clear that the title would become vacant simply through that action.

In a brief interview backstage tonight on WWE Raw, Stephanie McMahon confirmed the title is indeed now vacant, but that was far from her only revelation. McMahon also announced that all charges against Becky Lynch had been dropped, Lynch’s suspension has been lifted, and she’ll even be competing at Fastlane. However, that match comes with a condition.

Due to Becky’s lingering knee injury, and refusal to see WWE‘s doctors about it, Becky Lynch must sign a “hold harmless agreement” so that WWE won’t be held liable if she’s hurt in the match. It’s a logical way to work around Lynch’s refusal to see doctors. If she does so, we’ll see her challenge Charlotte Flair at Fastlane with the winner leaving as the new Raw Women’s Champion.

It seemed clear to most fans when Vince McMahon pulled Lynch from the match that we were on our way to a triple threat at WrestleMania between Lynch, Rousey, and Flair. Somehow, the path to that match has gotten more confusing with each passing week. Tonight’s news from Stephanie McMahon has only added to that, but it doesn’t mean Fastlane and WrestleMania can’t still be great.

Even if they do so in spite of convoluted storytelling, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch could have an absolutely fantastic match at Fastlane. If their past outings are any indication, they could definitely steal the show on Sunday. Don’t be surprised if Ronda Rousey somehow becomes a part of things as well, potentially setting up WrestleMania.

These three women deserve to be the main event of WrestleMania, even if WWE has chosen to take the weirdest possible path to get there. If given the proper spotlight and stage they’re working towards, the Raw Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania can still be truly awesome. Until we get there, just sit back and enjoy another chapter in Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair.
