Simon Gotch vs Ace Romero

As we saw last week, Gotch is no longer the mustachioed bandit of old. Simon Gotch without facial hair is akin to Tom Selleck or Alex Trebek shaving their trademark mustaches and I’m still in recovery mode over it.

Romero was out to prove that his previous win over Gotch wasn’t a fluke and was well on his way to doing so through the opening minutes of the match. Romero was also keen to show that he’s not just your standard big man – after knocking Gotch to the arena floor, Acey Baby flew to the floor with a suicide dive!

Gotch found himself back in control of his massive opponent back in the ring, slowing the pace down and turning things more toward grappling and striking. Gotch took a moment to yell to Jim Cornette on commentary that there would be “no flips” just “kicks and fists.” Sounds familiar…

Romero fought back and looked to flatten Gotch with a huge Samoan Drop when Gotch’s backup hit the ring. Jacob Fatu and Josef Samael attacked Romero causing the match to be thrown out.

The CONTRA Unit trio laid into Romero including Samael driving a metal spike into the head of Acey Baby, busting the vulnerable beast wide open. The group continued their beatdown of Romero until Gotch decided they had served their purpose and placed a pair of coins over Romero’s eyes. They draped him in the CONTRA Unit flag, as they did to Lawlor last week, before exiting to close the show.

How was it? The match wasn’t much to write home about since it was cut so short. In the time they did have, Romero once again showcased his insane agility for a guy his size while Gotch’s resiliency was on display when fighting back against the big man.

This was more of a highlight for CONTRA Unit as a whole than anything else. After Fatu’s ridiculous splash from the top of the cage onto Lawlor last week, the trio once again made their mark by laying waste to an adversary.

With Promociones Dorado and The Hart Foundation already established as top groups in Major League Wrestling, CONTRA Unit is well on their way to proving they belong in the conversation as the most dangerous stable in the promotion.
