Roman Reigns doesn’t have a match lined up for WWE WrestleMania 35 after returning to the ring recently from a second battle with leukemia, but Drew McIntyre would be a fantastic opponent for him.

The Shield reunited on the episode of WWE Raw before Fastlane, and their match together at the Cleveland Pay Per View couldn’t have gone any better. Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins absolutely dismantled the heel trio of Baron Corbin, Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre, but the villains weren’t done yet.

On the Mar. 11 episode of Monday Night Raw in Pittsburgh, Reigns was scheduled to face Corbin in his first one-on-one match since returning. Reigns had every reason to go after Corbin in singles competition, given that the disastrous former “Acting GM” minimized his battle with leukemia and desperately needed a follow-up ass-kicking after Fastlane.

Instead, McIntyre had other plans. He attacked Reigns and beat him all around ringside, to the point where Roman’s Shield brothers had to come out and help The Big Dog. Reigns needed medical treatment, and an incensed Ambrose immediately went after McIntyre, getting Triple H to book him in a Falls Count Anywhere match that night.

McIntyre’s heinous assault on Reigns plants a seed for both of their WrestleMania matches. To this point, their directions for ‘Mania have been unclear, but they are arguably Raw’s top two male stars and will win Universal Championships soon enough; Reigns’s second Universal Title reign is essentially a guarantee.

But the two haven’t faced off in a match yet. Their brief staredown at Fastlane during the six-man tag main event was electric, and fans could feel the hairs on their arms rise as the two elite wrestlers prepared to destroy each other. After McIntyre’s beatdown of Reigns on Raw, the tensions couldn’t be higher.

It’s unclear if Reigns will get a big singles match at WrestleMania after returning from a fight with an incredibly serious disease, but he hasn’t missed a beat in the ring and is performing at a high level. Reigns has faced some of the biggest stars in wrestling – Brock Lesnar. The Undertaker, and Triple H – in his last four WrestleMania appearances, so it stands to reason that he’ll have a huge opponent at ‘Mania 35.

McIntyre, who is a former NXT Champion and was once known as “The Chosen One” when he wasn’t yet the full package that he is today, is exactly that type of opponent. The WWE Universe respects McIntyre and Reigns as characters, athletes, and performers, as neither man has a weakness to their game.

WWE fans worried about McIntyre getting “buried” shouldn’t fret. Yes, Reigns should win this match, but nobody has been hurt by losing to Reigns, who is positioned as WWE’s strongest male competitor. In fact, wrestlers who face Reigns are always elevated, with Braun Strowman being a prime example. If McIntyre were to lose to Reigns, which would be the likely outcome, he’d end up benefiting by having an amazing WrestleMania match with one of the industry’s best.

Their styles would mesh perfectly, and McIntyre can be the perfect heel foil for Reigns. McIntyre can match Reigns for intensity as an athlete and talker, and there is no doubt that this clash of superstars would be worthy of a WrestleMania match on a loaded card in New York City.
